My first solo show.
Since coming back from Berlin I’ve been working and working. I took a few months to only paint and not be distracted by anything else. The result of this will be the exhibition IMPERFECTION IS THE GOAL, NOT THE RESULT.
After agreeing on a date for the show, I started looking for an overarching theme in my work, as my subjects tend to go in any direction. In all the elements of religion, mythology, mental health, and politics, I found that the theme of imperfection connected them all. From the way that I work, to the way I want to show my paintings, Imperfection is there, and I want to take this space to celebrate it.
I feel like imperfection is always something to accept (‘It’s OK, nobody’s perfect’) but in my opinion imperfection is what makes us who we are. I do not want perfect friends, I do not want a perfect life. I want things that are real and made by human hands, and I want friends with cracks and problems. To me these things, and people, are the most interesting. Online, I see a constant striving for perfection. We have to go to the gym, we have to eat well, we have to behave, we have to be conscious of everything, and it seems so boring to me. Because of the time we live in, and the way we are fed these images of perfection, I believe it is important to have a sound opposing that. That is what I’m trying to do with this exhibition.
I will be showing between 15 and 20 paintings, some made back in Berlin, some in Leiden. All the paintings shown will be for sale. The exhibition will be at Yomooka in Leiden, situated at the Haagweg 4E13. The opening will find place on the 30th of May, from 19:00 to 22:00. I hope to see you there, so we can raise a glass to imperfection. Much love.
